In the 1940's, one of the world's most complete skeletons of a prehistoric human was discovered here. This skeleton, nicknamed "Mrs. Ples," was an important piece of evidence supporting the idea that humans originated in Africa. At the time, this idea caused controversy in a field dominated by European thought.
