This facility was originally built by NASA in 1961 to receive data from its missions to the moon (Ranger, Surveyor, Apollo), Venus (Mariner), and Mars (Mariner). After this facility was abandoned by NASA, the South African government converted it into the Hartebeesthoek radio astronomy observatory. (As you will read later, 1961 was also the year political prisoners began arriving on Robben Island.)
