The Sun was totally eclipsed by the Moon for about 3.5 minutes. The Sun's spectacular corona, its "atmosphere" of extremely hot gas, is visible only during a total eclipse because the corona is a million times fainter than direct sunlight. For this part of the eclipse, safety filters are not required or recommended for observation.
