Turkey is a country that literally bridges Europe and Asia. Islam is practiced by 98% of its population. Turkey's neighbors include Syria, Iraq, Iran, Armenia, Georgia, Bulgaria, and Greece. (With neighbors like the first three, who needs enemies?) At one point in our trip, we were a day's drive from Iraq and half a day's drive from Syria. Even with these Middle Eastern neighbors, Turkey's atmosphere feels strongly European. (Map source: Google Earth)
