Due to a number of technical and environmental factors, The Last Supper began to deteriorate almost as soon as Leonardo da Vinci finished it. The painting has been restored several times since then. The most recent restoration was completed in 1999 after 21 years of work. To protect the painting from humidity, the room is climate controlled, and only 30 visitors are allowed to enter every 15 minutes and stay for exactly 15 minutes. Tickets to see The Last Supper are difficult to obtain, even in advance. Although faded and cracked, the painting still inspires wonder.
