In Oslo, our hosts drove us around in a Tesla Model S, and we had a glimpse of what may be the future of automotive transportation. The car's acceleration is outrageous (0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds), and its self-driving function is eerie. Norway is a fitting place to test-ride a Tesla because it is Tesla's largest market worldwide. You can't drive more than a few minutes in Oslo without seeing one. This is a result of significant government incentives to encourage electric vehicles, such as an exemption from purchase taxes. This exemption is a huge factor because the tax rate on an ordinary car purchase is 100% (a doubling) of the car's base price.
